STONEYWOOD-DYCE batsman Neil van Vuuren insists his best has yet to come after his impressive start to his career in Scotland.
The South African, who has been with the club for just three weeks, made 67 runs as they beat Renfrew at Peoples Park. A trip to RH Corstorphine is next up and the overseas amateur is aiming to make another good impression.
He said: “It is going really well so far for me in Scotland. My new team-mates laughed when I said I was still getting used to the cold weather here and they told me this week is the warmest it has been here for some time, which is a bit worrying.
“The wicket is much slower here and batting is a different prospect altogether as, nomatter how much the wicket is rolled, the ground is very spongy.
“The cricket here is very different to back home and, while I did well last week, I have a lot to learn here, especially as far as the conditions are concerned. Once I get up to speed I’m sure I can do well for the club.”
Stoneywood-Dyce captain Jan Stander shares his compatriot’s optimism about what to expect this season.
He said: “Neil is a very good player and I know he harbours dreams of turning professional. He’s only been with us a short while but I can tell already he is a class player. He is ambitious and wants to do well for the club and that can only be good for us.”
David Lamb and Stuart Coetzer return to the team for tomorrow’s game in place of Lawrence Wattie and Mike Louw.
Stander said: “It is important for the club that the second 11 get back into the top flight of the Strathmore league and a club decision has been taken to let Mike captain the seconds this weekend.
“It is a big loss for us as Mike has been a mainstay of the team for a few years now, but the club situation has to come first and it is an important year for the second side.
“Our loss will undoubtedly be their gain this weekend I’m sure.”
