Buoyant Brewster plays down crisis talk

Caley Jags need to win to avoid worst SPL finish

Published:

Caley Thistle manager Craig Brewster yesterday played down reports of a dressing-room crisis at the club.

During a dismal seven-game losing sequence from late February to the end of March a disagreement with midfielder Ian Black angered both the manager and the player’s team-mates.

Brewster banished Black to train with the club’s under-19s and, with each defeat, the team’s morale visibly dipped.

Yet, after breaking the sequence to win three of their last four SPL games the Caley Jags manager says the mood in the Inverness camp has changed from despair to euphoria.

He said: “No one likes to lose games of football but the run we went on when we were seven games without a win, that is when it gets tough.

“Now there is a real buzz and it has been happening for a few weeks.

“People talk about the end of the season being flat but it is the complete opposite here.

“The standard in training has been exceptional and when you have a happy camp like that you have a chance to produce good performances.

“As a manager you have to deal with certain things as we are a Premier League club.

“When little things happen it is big news and stories have arms and legs put on them and suddenly there is a crisis.

“There was a problem and it was dealt with – end of story.

“It does not mean there is a problem in the dressing-room. It was blown out of proportion.

“It is my job to manage the players and it is not easy at times. There are 20-odd guys in the dressing-room with 20 different issues.

“The main issue is we are all trying to win and we have to try and win together.”

Caley Jags need to defeat Falkirk today to avoid their worst SPL finish.

Brewster said: “It is win or bust against Falkirk if we want to go above them.

“We are trying to catch them and they are trying to catch Hearts and we will see what position we are in after today’s game.”
