A HOST of classical music stars gathered at London’s Royal Albert Hall last night for what was billed as the biggest show in the history of the Classical Brit awards.

Performers at this year’s event included Josh Groban, David Garrett, Hayley Westenra and Jonathan Ansell.

The show opened with a duet from tenor Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman, who reunited for a rendition of Canto Della Terra.

The ceremony's host, musician and television presenter Myleene Klass, appeared on stage in a purple strapless gown to introduce the evening's performances.

Among those presenting awards to the seven winners were Annie Lennox, Classic FM DJ Lawrence Llewelyn-Bowen and actor Brian Blessed.

Speaking to journalists during the ceremony, Llewelyn-Bowen, who is also an ambassador for the aid agency Care International, urged people to give money to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) to help victims of the cyclone in Burma.

Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti was named Young British Classical Performer. The 21-year-old has five Classical Brit nominations, but this is her first award.

Blake, the ex-choirboys who formed through social networking site Facebook, scooped one of the biggest prizes at the Classical Brits last night.

The classical boyband signed a million-pound, five-album deal with record label Universal last summer.
