Mair injury blow for Dons

season looks over for defender as aberdeen go win or bust at well

Lee Mair will play no further part in Aberdeen’s campaign after being injured while playing for the Dons reserves on Thursday.

The defender lasted just 40 minutes in the 1-1 draw at Falkirk and manager Jimmy Calderwood says the player is unlikely to play any part in the remaining two matches.

Calderwood said: “Lee got injured and it looks like the end of the season for him. He took a knock after 25 minutes and tried to run it off but it was too sore. I don’t expect him to return this season. Jonathan Smith, Jame Smith and Derek Young and Richie Byrne are also all injured.”

Calderwood also has doubts on Alan Maybury, Darren Mackie and Sone Aluko for today’s crucial game at Motherwell, while the talismanic Zander Diamond is suspended.

The Dons must take all three points to keep alive their hopes of a third-place finish and Calderwood insists all the pressure is on Mark McGhee’s Steelmen.

He said: “We have got to win, it’s that simple. The pressure is on Motherwell. They are the big favourites as they still have a game in hand after this one. All we can do is try to win the game and exert as much pressure as possible on them.

“We have beaten Dundee United and Hibernian and if we can make it a hat-trick of wins it will hopefully set up an exciting final day of the season.

“We know from last season how difficult it is to get across the finishing line. Mark McGhee knows his side is one game away but the last game you need to win is always the hardest.

“A draw would suit them as we will be out of the equation. It’s a simple ask for us and we know what we have to do.”
