Woman is killed in road accident

Police appeal over Perthshire smash as man injured after Westhill crash

A woman was killed in a car accident in Perthshire last night.

The incident happened last night on the A923 Blairgowrie road in Coupar Angus at around 8.20pm. Another motorist was injured in the smash.

The road was closed to allow crash investigators to carry out a “thorough examination” of the scene and diversions were set up.

Tayside Police appealed last night for witnesses to the accident with a spokesman saying: “We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time or who saw a green Land Rover Discovery being driven in the Rosemount Blairgowrie area or southwards towards Coupar Angus at this time.”

Anyone with information has been urged to call police on 0845 6005705.

In another accident last night, a 31-year-old man was taken to hospital after a peak-time crash near Aberdeen.

The one-car accident happened around 4.40pm on the A944 road between Westhill and Kingswells. Following the crash the man was seen being strapped to a spinal board before being taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Police last night could not confirm how serious the man’s injuries were.

Officers from Grampian Police along with crews from Grampian Fire and Rescue and the Scottish Ambulance service were alerted to the incident.

The westbound carriageway of the dual carriageway was closed near the Five Mile garage and a diversion was set up for traffic at the Brodiach road.

The road was reopened three hours after the crash.

Jean Pirie has lived at Backhill, a farm near the scene of yesterday’s incident, for the past 50 years.

The 70-year-old said she had lost count of the number of crashes on the road.

It is understood the injured man’s Vauxhall Corsa car hit a wall before striking a lamppost. It came to rest at the side of the road.

Speaking from the scene, Constable Gary Donald said: “A 31-year-old man has been taken to hospital in Aberdeen. It is too early to say the extent of his injuries but we can confirm he was conscious when he was in the ambulance.”

Meanwhile, the heartbroken mother of a 24-year-old Angus man killed in a motorcycle accident has paid tribute to her son, saying “he just loved life”.

Construction worker Andrew Bell, known in the Kirriemuir area as Andy, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident on Thursday night.

His bike was involved in a collision with a Vauxhall Zafira on the B957 Brechin road, two miles from Kirriemuir at around 6.25pm.

Police are appealing for witnesses.

Mr Bell’s mother, Dorothy, a nurse at Balhousie Lisden Nursing Home at Kirriemuir, said her son had been passionate about cars and motorcycles since he was a boy, an interest he shared with his older brother, George.

Born at Forfar but raised at his family’s home near Glamis, Mr Bell was educated at Glamis Primary School and Webster High School, Kirriemuir. He left in fourth year after work experience with a local tyre-fitting company, where he made such a positive impression that he was offered a job.

He often rode around Angus but had been known to go as far afield as Inverness just for the drive.

Mr Bell had only recently taken his Kawasaki motorcycle out of storage after the winter.

Mrs Bell said her son’s willingness to help others and turn his hand to anything made him popular with those who knew him, and the night before his death had been helping a family friend repaint her kitchen. She added: “He just loved life, was a party-goer and would go out in Kirriemuir and Forfar with his pals. He always had a smile on his face.”

Anyone with information about the accident should call 0845 600 5705 or speak to any officer.
