A FUN event with a serious message began in Elgin yesterday aimed at keeping children safe in what can be a hostile environment.
Moray Safe Team is two days of interactive child-safety messages for primary seven children in the area. It is intended to make them more aware of the hazards posed by roads, fire and water.
Grampian Fire and Rescue Service has teamed up with Grampian Police, NHS Grampian, the Coastguard and the Red Cross to present the event at the Territorial Army centre in Edgar Road. The second batch of youngsters attends today from 10-11.30am and from 1-2.30pm.
Moray Safe Team, now in its third year, is affiliated to the successful Grampian Safe Team, which has been running for 17 years. Harry Officer, crew manager in community education for Grampian Fire and Rescue Service, said the event was an excellent learning opportunity for the children. It is also a great opportunity for all the emergency services to come together to provide the information that is most relevant to children of this age,” he said. “It’s an interactive learning experience so the children are not just benefiting from receiving invaluable safety advice. It’s also great fun for them.”
Averil Duncan, from Grampian Police, said: “The information the children are provided with on the day is invaluable and the follow-up lessons conducted in school, with the ability to enter our poster competition, means that the safety messages are kept alive.”
Schools involved are Cluny School, Buckie; Crossroads Primary, Keith; East End Primary, Elgin; Llanbryde Primary, Inveravon Primary, Logie Primary, Forres; Millbank Primary, Buckie; Rothes Primary, Portgordon Primary, Cullen Primary and Milne’s Primary, Fochabers.
