IT MAY be taking place more than 500 miles from the Granite City and the home of the Dons but, for one proud Aberdeen father, today’s FA Cup final has extra special meaning.

City man Walter Rae has booked his place at Wembley Stadium, where he will be cheering on his son, Gavin, a midfielder with final hopefuls Cardiff City.

The Championship side faces competition from firm favourites Portsmouth.

Mr Rae, 56, a paint spray shop supervisor with Bristow Helicopters, said being the underdog does not rule his son’s side out.

“Portsmouth are a class side full of class players, but if Cardiff can play at the top of their game then they have a chance,” he said.

“I was at the final league game of the season when they beat Barnsley. If they play like that, then they could surprise people.”

Rae, a Scotland international with 12 caps, has played a key role with Cardiff, who have beaten Chasetown, Hereford United, Wolves, Middlesbrough and Barnsley on their way to the cup final.

Today’s final could see Cardiff cause another upset, 81 years after they became the only non-English side to win the famous trophy when they shocked hot favourites Arsenal 1-0.

Mr Rae, of Forvie Terrace, Bridge of Don, said: “We’re so proud of him. Gavin’s got a bit on his plate at the moment as his wife, Barbara, is expecting twins next month.”

Mr Rae and his twin brother Billy will be joined in London by his wife Mary, their daughter Dawn and her husband Phil.
