SUTHERLAND residents enjoyed a free swimming session at the weekend to celebrate the official reopening of their local pool.

Sutherland Swimming Pool, in Golspie, had a £1.2million refurbishment by Highland Council and was closed for nearly two years after engineers discovered a leak.

The facility now has a refurbished 25-metre pool, including sauna and steam room. The changing rooms were revamped and the fitness room has been extended.

Other repairs have included removing the pool walkway and replacing it with new concrete and re-tiling the pool tank and the floor in the pool hall.

Alterations were also made to meet with requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.

The pool will now host swimming lessons for children and adults as well as classes in life-saving, first aid and aqua aerobics.

Councillor Bill Fernie, who opened the pool, said: “I trust that people within the local catchment area and further afield will use it for regular health and fitness visits.

“But I hope they will also use it for day trips and holiday fun.”
