World champion Zara Phillips had an off day – but Scotland international Ruth Edge notched a Burgie double yesterday.

Edge secured victory in the one-star and two-star dressage events in the Burgie three-day event.

In foul weather conditions, Zara Phillips was equal seventh in the one-star dressage on the Queen's seven-year old skewbald mare Tiger Lily IX and seventh in the two-star event on 11-year-old chestnut gelding Secret Legacy.

Edge won the one-star competition with 37.5pt riding Paper Tiger, an eight-year-old grey gelding. She was also second in the same event, scoring 39.3pt with Nick of Thyme, a seven-year-old bay gelding.

Third with 46.8pt was New Zealand’s Caroline Powell on Cathpair High Hopes, a seven-year-old chestnut gelding.

Edge, who is one of three reserve riders for the British Olympic team travelling to Beijing this year, finished first in the two-star dressage event on 12-year-old chestnut gelding P.C. Wilson, scoring 43.1pt. Second with 44.4pt was Nigel Taylor, on nine-year-old bay gelding Oscar Knight and third with 47.5pt was Eire's Caroline Bjoerk on 13-year-old strawberry roan gelding Huckleberry Friend.

Edge coped well in the damp conditions and said: “I had a really lovely day and all the horses did the best for their stage and age in the dressage.

“I am really pleased with all of them. I was lucky enough that the horses moved really well and showed themselves off well in the arena and it makes the job a little bit easier. I am thrilled with them.

“The horses do get used to the conditions. When it is torrential sideways rain they don't like it, nor do the riders. Although the weather was a bit miserable for everyone, I don't think it affected the horses much. It did not affect me either – but I do like riding in the sunshine.

“It was a good starting point and the weather forecast is not good so it will make the cross-country tough. There is the showjumping on the final day but we have had a good start."
