ORKNEY ultra-distance runner William Sichel will this weekend attempt to break a 126-year-old record.

The 54-year-old will travel to Hamm, Germany, set on running for more than 546 miles in a six-day race.

The record was set by George Cameron in New York in 1882.

Edinburgh-born Scot Cameron, who ran professionally in America using Noremac as his surname, recorded the distance on an indoor track.

But Sichel will run on a red cinder track at the Adolf Bruhl stadium in Hamm, near Dortmund.

He will begin the attempt on Sunday at 1pm and aims to finish on Saturday, July 5, at 1pm.

It will be Sichel’s third six-day race after twice winning the Monaco six-day road race event.

The Orkney Athletic Club member is hoping that conditions will be kinder.

He said: “When I won the Monaco race last year I improved my best by almost a marathon and that was despite very poor weather conditions for the last three days. I am hopeful, that if the weather is reasonable I have got a fighting chance of challenging the old record.”

Sichel, from Upper Breckan in Sanday, will enter the event after a fifth-placed finish in the world 48-hour championships at Surgere, France, last month.
