Professional triathlete Scott Neyedli will compete against more than 200 participants in Sunday's Stonehaven half marathon.

The Metro Aberdeen Running Club member will use the race as part of the build-up towards the defence of his Ironman UK title later this summer.

His approach to the race will be unusual as he plans to warm-up by cycling the 17 miles to Stonehaven from his home in Aberdeen.

He said: “I intend cycling over to do the race but it depends on the weather. Then after the half marathon I'll maybe do another one to two hours on the bike."

Neyedli's previous best performance at Stonehaven was third place in 2005. His rivals on Sunday include Aber-deen's Scott Young, winner of the Ythan Challenge adventure race at Ellon.

Marion Wood (Arbroath Footers) tries for a fourth win in a row in the women's race. She can expect a strong challenge from Carolyn McLeod who won last month's Beach 10k at Aberdeen.

Metro Aberdeen runners Caroline Wood and Louise Beveridge should also feature while Forfar's Cath McInally and Edinburgh's Rachel Spencer will also be well to the fore. Entries are being taken before the 11.15am start. There are also accompanying 3k and 1k fun runs

Alasdair Thomas is one of the favourites to win the Corrieyairack Challenge duathlon race between Fort Augustus and Kincraig tomorrow. The Aberdeenshire athlete is not taking anything for granted after a series of near-misses in long distance multisport events in recent years. This will be his fourth appearance in the race, which comprises a 17-mile mountain run and a 26-mile road cycle. The event raises funds for the Badaguish Outdoor Centre, a registered charity near Aviemore.

Haddington's Brian Marshall will bid for a sixth win in a row in the annual David Shepherd Memorial Glamaig hill race on Syke tomorrow.
