DONS legend Alex McLeish was honoured at Aberdeen University yesterday for his footballing achievements.
Along with other honorary graduates, the former Aberdeen skipper was awarded a doctorate at a ceremony in the city’s Marischal College.
The former Scotland defender, nicknamed Big Eck, was joined by hundreds of students for the big day.
After the ceremony, Mr McLeish, who won the European Cup Winners Cup with the Dons in 1983 and has gone on to enjoy a career as a manager, said the honour was just as good as any of the silverware he won in football.
“I have been up to collect trophies and medals in the past — and this is right up there with those,” he said.
“You wonder if you will be a part of these ceremonies and it is great to be recognised like this, if a bit surprising too.
“This is my first honorary degree, and while friends and players used to call me ‘The Doc’ before, now it’s official.”
