trial striker to face danish superliga side managed by ex-celt after scoring against lfa outfit

Caley Thistle getting closer to making an offer to Rooney

Caley Thistle manager Craig Brewster has been tracking Irish under-21 international Adam Rooney for the past three months.

Stoke City attacker Rooney, 20, is on a week-long trial with Inverness after joining the club on their pre-season tour of Denmark.

The Dublin-born forward scored against Danish First Division side Lolland-Falster Alliancen in a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night and will be offered a loan deal at the club if he continues to impress.

Rooney will today play against Danish Superliga side FC Nordsjaelland in Farum, where the Caley Thistle squad are based, and also against First Division team Herfolge on Saturday.

Brewster was pleased with the forward’s performance against LFA and said: “Sometimes you can tell a player’s attitude about a club from their body language and he looks a real prospect.

“I don’t know how many times I spoke to Stoke City manager Tony Pulis at the end of last season about Adam. I had to wait until they actually came back for pre-season for Tony to speak to Adam. I was speaking to a couple of contacts I have in England and told them I was looking for an attacker and his name came up. I made a few contacts and calls and spoke to Tony.

“Stoke are now in the Premier League which is a big step up and that is why I think Tony would be keen to give him to us.”

Brewster will face old friend Morten Wieghorst, who is entering his third year as manager of FC Nordsjaelland, this afternoon at Farum Park and added: “I played for Dundee United and he played for Dundee and we had a mutual friend.

“We have had a few good nights out and a few battles on the field in games.

“He had a good playing career and he is now three years into his coaching career.

“He will put out a strong squad as they don’t play again until next Tuesday when they play in the qualifying round of the Uefa Cup. We played against FC Nordsjaelland with Caley Thistle three years ago and we won 1-0 and I then brought Dundee United to Denmark and they beat us 1-0.

“It is one apiece at the moment and it will be a really good test for us.”

Wieghorst, who spent 10 years in Scotland playing for both Dundee and Celtic, anticipated a rigorous physical challenge in today’s friendly match.

Canadian international midfielder Patrice Bernier, a summer capture from FC Kaiserslautern, will play and the FC Nordsjaelland manager said: “We have only just started our season and we lost at home last Sunday against Brondby in our first game. The timing of the Caley Thistle game is good as we were due to play Odense last week, but as they are playing Aston Villa in the Intertoto Cup and our game was postponed. Craig Brewster was in Farum with Caley Thistle three years ago and most of the team are the same as then. I still follow Scottish football and Craig has done well since he went back to Inverness.”
