A MEMBER of staff at a city school has been suspended amid allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a teenage boy.

Police confirmed last night that they were investigating an accusation made against a member of staff at Bankhead Academy, Bucksburn.

And a spokesman for the local authority said a member of staff from the school had been suspended.

Residents in the nearby Kepplehills, Bankhead and Newhills areas of Bucksburn reacted to the news with shock yesterday.

One source close to the Bankhead Avenue school revealed that the head teacher informed staff about a complaint against a female member of staff.

According to the source, who wanted to remain anonymous because she fears she could lose her job, the academy’s head teacher, Athol Garden, made the announcement during an end-of-term meeting in the staffroom.

It is understood a second meeting was held, during which the name of the woman was revealed.

Last night, a man in the Kepplehills area said his daughter had been told that a 16-year-old boy and a learning support teacher, understood to be in her late 20s, were alleged to be in a relationship.

The man, who also asked not to be named, said the boy was living locally.

Last year Bankhead Academy was criticised in an inspectors’ report for having “poor leadership”.

A police spokesman said last night: “We can confirm we are making inquiries into an allegation made against a member of staff at Bankhead Academy.

“Inquiries are ongoing and we can make no further comment on the inquiry.”

A spokesman for Aberdeen City Council said: “I can confirm a member of staff has been suspended.

“It would be inappropriate to comment further as there is an ongoing police investigation.”

Neither Mr Garden nor anyone from the school’s board could be contacted last night.
