Teacher shortages mean the council will underspend this year
Teacher shortages mean that Aberdeen City Council estimates it will spent almost £600,000 less than it had planned on its staffing costs.
Members of Aberdeen City Council’s finance, policy and resources services committee will hear next week that the local authority is estimated to underspend on staffing costs by £586,000.
It is currently trying to fill 71 vacancies, with the majority being for teachers.
Other vacancies include catering assistants, carers, electricians and joiners.
City council finance convener Willie Young said in one case a post for a manager has been vacant for two years.
He said: “We want to spend this money but we are really struggling. We can’t fill some vacancies.
“For example, a post for a manager who is responsible for the city centre has been vacant for two years.
“We are trying to maintain services so we have to do what our resources allow us to.”
