Lamb airs views on travelling distances

batsman calls on sncl to take notice

STONEYWOOD-DYCE batsman David Lamb has called for league reconstruction to be put on the agenda again in the SNCL.

The former club captain at Peoples Park has hit out at the league for the current set-up and highlighted tomorrow’s game for Stoneywood-Dyce at Dumfries as an example.

He said: “I am unable to make the game this weekend due to the travelling involved and Elton Willemse will also be absent.

“A game against Dumfries means a four and a half hour journey each way at least.

“We have to leave on the Friday evening and then stay down on the Saturday or arrive back at 3am on a Sunday morning. It is no use to the guys like myself who have family.”

Regional leagues have been in use in the past in the SNCL but Lamb does not hold out hope of a return to the set-up any time soon.

He said: “The issue is the same for clubs when they have to make a long journey to Aberdeen to play ourselves or Stoneywood-Dyce, but it seems we are one of the few clubs willing to speak out about the matter. Because we are not Central Belt based, our argument doesn’t carry much weight.

“It will be even worse next year if Huntly win promotion and join the SNCL for next season.

“They will face Dumfries next year and that is a 300-mile journey. It’s ridiculous for clubs at this level.

Despite missing tomorrow’s match, Lamb is confident the league leaders will get the win.

He said: “We have to win every game now. Even a match rained off is as good as a loss at this stage.

“We did really well last weekend with Michael Leask coming in higher up the batting order and I am sure Jan Stander will be looking to him to do well again this week.

“Clubs rely a lot on professionals and overseas amateurs but we all like to see local youngsters doing well and Michael has certainly been doing that this year.”
