HEAVY horses, diligent dogs and aspiring athletes all took their place on the field yesterday at Montrose Highland Games.

The event, now in its 30th year, was attended by around 5,000 spectators who basked in the sunshine for most of the day. Last night secretary Pauline Robertson said she was delighted with the turnout for what had been a very enjoyable day.

Visitors to the show enjoyed the usual attractions, such as Highland dancing, heavy horses, piping and a dog show.

There were also popular heavy field events to help draw in the crowds and a wide range of stalls on site. The games, held at the town’s East Links, also hosted the British tug o war championship and some hay-sheaf tossing by visiting Spanish athletes.

The town’s Rose Queen, local schoolgirl Bobbie Paton, was awarded her crown by an Austin Powers lookalike.

Miss Robertson said the event had been a huge success. “It’s gone really well. It’s been a lovely day,” she said.
