MORAY Council began a clean-up operation yesterday after a group of travellers left a trail of rubbish when they moved on from a tiny seaside community.

They had moved their eight caravans on to the beach car park at Kingston prior to the Keith Show and stayed for six nights. During their stopover, locals complained of human waste being dumped, rubbish being strewn all over the car park and dogs roaming the village.

One resident was so incensed by his temporary neighbours he wrote to the convener of Moray Council, Councillor George McIntyre, asking him to put a complete stop to travellers using the site.

The letter, written by John Fensome, claimed locals had been “molested by the travellers’ dogs”. It also said that the travellers had caused distress to everyone in the area.

A spokesman for Moray Council said the site is crown property and travellers could effectively stay there until a court order was produced to remove them.

Three council workers were clearing up the car park yesterday.

As well as picking up the travellers’ empty dog food tins, dirty nappies and clothes, they found household goods which had been dumped.

A villager whose house is near the car park said the travellers have not caused her any problems.

The woman, who did not want to be named, said: “I don’t agree that they should be here permanently but they don’t make any noise at night and they don’t stay for long.

“They even put most of their rubbish into bin bags for the council to collect.”
