Deveronvale set up a home Challenge Cup semi-final against Cove Rangers after an 89th-minute winner from substitute Grant Noble against Buckie Thistle at Banff on Saturday.
The game looked to be heading for extra time until the youngster took a Robbie Duncanson feed, steadied himself and wrong-footed Kevin Main in the Buckie goal with a well-placed shot.
The big crowd had plenty to shout about, with several goal-line clearances and the woodwork coming to the visitors’ rescue twice.
Buckie were the better team in the opening 25 minutes but Vale were in the ascendancy after Scott Fraser’s header cancelled out Steve Bruce’s earlier goal.
Vale co-manager Stuart Glennie was delighted with his side’s performance and said: “We deserved our victory.
“Buckie started well and looked the brighter side in the first 20 minutes but in the last 25 minutes of the first half I think we did really well and passed the ball well. Apart from maybe the first 10 minutes of the second half, when we were a bit flat, we looked the more likely team to score, although it did look like it was heading for extra time.
“Buckie were the team pushing on when we got the important equaliser which came at a time when we weren’t really playing that well.”
Buckie manager Kevin Will said: “We started the game brightly and took a good opportunity but never really kicked on. Cup games are all about results, and they got the right one, they pressed with the wind behind them, we defended fairly well, but didn’t ask enough questions of them.”
The visitors opened the scoring in the 16th minute, when Scott Fraser was drawn out of the middle and Paul Napier took full advantage with a pinpoint cross into the path of Steve Bruce, who swept the ball past James Blanchard from six yards.
Buckie were on top until Vale equalised in the 28th minute, Steve Dolan’s quickly-taken free kick found Gary McGowan and when his back-post cross picked out Fraser, the big central defen-der made no mistake.
Chisholm hit the Jags post and Fraser almost uprooted the goal with another volley which crashed back off the junction of post and crossbar, just after Main brilliantly tipped a netbound clearance from his opposite number Blanchard over the top.
With 60 seconds left Deveronvale secured a semi-final berth when Robbie Duncanson’s pass found Grant Noble, who had only been on the pitch for five minutes, and the youngster showed composure to steady himself and beat Main.
