ANGUS will celebrate its cultural diversity next month with a week-long series of events across the county.

An extensive programme of social events and activities is planned between September 1-7 to give Angus’s diverse cultural communities the opportunity to find out more about each other.

Angus Council and its community planning partners, with local Rotarians and representatives from various minority ethnic groups, such as the Chinese Association and eastern European communities, have been involved in planning the week.

Activities will include belly dancing, food tasting, painting, language-taster sessions, environmental projects and international music.

Throughout the week people of various nationalities will visit schools giving pupils an insight into life in their homelands.

The week’s finale will be a multicultural fun day in the Reid Hall, Forfar, on Sunday, September 7, from noon to 4pm.

Doreen Philips, of Angus Council, said people would be able to sample the culture and culinary delights of the various international communities now represented in Angus.

She added: “The Reid Hall will host Chinese, Italian and eastern food demonstrations and tastings, Highland dancing, folk singing, Indian head massages, African drumming and Chinese brush painting.

“The family event will be the culmination of a week’s celebration of the diversity of Angus’s communities when we have the chance to find out more about each other’s cultures, customs and day-to-day lives.”

All events are free with some part-sponsored by local companies. Full details of the week’s programme are available on the Angus Ahead website at www.angusahead.com
