A FESTIVAL using the sea as a theme to tie together all types of north-east talent has announced an eclectic programme of events.

Next month’s See Salt and Sound Festival aims to illustrate every aspect of the sea and seafaring through a variety of mediums, including storytelling, music and visual arts.

The idea was dreamed up by a group of Aberdeen artists who found the theme of the sea already ran through the work they were producing.

Festival chairwoman Margaret Preston said: “We want to provide a platform to get Aberdeen artists to stay in Aberdeen, instead of feeling the need to go off to the central belt.

“All of our sponsors have been very supportive of the project – they were brave enough to back an idea that hasn’t been tested before, which is very nice of them.”

Petro-Canada and Service Point UK are among the global and local companies backing the festival, which will include everything from canoeing and dancing to exhibitions and educational talks.

All of the events will be based in and around Aberdeen Beach Ballroom, ensuring the seafront remains close by.

One of the festival’s centrepieces will be a poetry competition for youngsters aged 6-16, with a very special prize. On the morning of Saturday, September 20, the winning poem will be written on the beach in giant letters and an aerial photograph will be taken courtesy of Bristow Helicopters.

The festival runs from September 13-22.
