Drumoak’s Bill Grant has achieved one of golf’s rarer achievements, completing a round in fewer strokes than his age.

The 69-year-old five-handi-capper produced a gross 68 on his way to winning the Saturday medal competition at Peterculter.

Sam Snead shot a 67 on the PGA Tour that equalled his age in 1979. And Gary Player actually managed to shoot lower than his age when he, too, was 67. Player said that as he grew older, it became one of his greatest motivations.

Player has now achieved the feat 17 times but Grant, who is originally from Forres, is more than happy to have done it just the once.

He said: “I am delighted, I don’t think these things happen too often.

“I have shot lower rounds over the years, my best was a 65, I think, but that was 30 or 40 years ago.”

Grant is no stranger to success on the golf course, winning seven club champion-ships between Peterculter and Murcar Links.

But after having open heart surgery, he believed his days of breaking 70 were behind him.

He said: “I was scratch for some time and managed to win a few club champion-ships now and again.

“But I do not think I have shot a sub-70 round for 10 years and I have had open heart surgery in that time as well.

“I must admit I did not think I would be doing it any time soon.”

Keith Golf Club beat Turriff 3

Keith reached the final after claiming victory in three out of their four matches in the pennant west section. They defeated Garmouth and Kingston, Buckpool and Strathlene, with their only loss coming against Rothes.

The final of the Aberdeen Pennant League between Newmachar and Deeside will take place at the Craibstone course on Sunday, September 14, starting at 2pm.

Banchory junior member Josh Crawley scored his first hole in one at the 125yd third hole on his home course using a pitching wedge. He was partnered by Gavin Buchan, Steven Buskie and Zac Crawley.
