WHETHER you are in employment and thinking about returning to education or are a school leaver reviewing your options, when it comes to thinking about entering higher education, the vast multitude of choices on offer can make the decision-making process extremely daunting.

In the current climate, where the range of possibilities are near limitless, fathoming a clear route for your future academic career can be complex. With thousands of institutes spread across the UK each offering a vast and diverse array of courses and degree programmes, assessing the best option which will meet your wish-list criteria and prove beneficial to your future career aspirations can be a significant challenge.

Aiming to provide prospective new students with the information they require to kick-start their academic career, more than 50 internationally renowned higher-education institutes from across the country will converge on Aberdeen next week as the annual Grampian Higher Education Convention returns.

Taking place on Wednesday and Thursday, September 10-11, the event brings together a host of esteemed institutes from Scotland, England and Wales, including Oxford University, the Imperial College of London, Edinburgh University and the University of Aberdeen.

Hosted by the University of Aberdeen and Careers Scotland, the convention provides an ideal opportunity for potential scholars to gather the essential information they require about universities from across the UK and speak with higher-education representatives and Careers Scotland advisers who can provide crucial guidance and support on the various academic routes on offer.

An early evening session will also take place as part of the convention, offering mature students and parents important insights and detailed information on the financial aspects of higher education.

Rachel Sandison, head of student recruitment and admissions at the University of Aberdeen, said: “The Grampian Higher Education Convention is a prime opportunity for those considering taking that important step into academia to gain the important information and advice they require.

“When reviewing your academic options, the geographical spread of institutes across the UK, alongside the abundance of course options each of these institutes offers, can make the decision-making process extremely challenging.

“Careful research and detailed planning is vital for those investigating the next step into higher education, but with a myriad degree programmes on offer, collating all the information you require to make an informed decision can be not only time-consuming, but also confusing.

“The convention is about bringing a strong selection of highly regarded institutes together under one roof to allow potential new students quick and simple access to all the crucial information they require to aid their decision on their academic career.

“Having all the information at hand is essential towards making the correct decision for your future education, and attendees will be able to review brochures and prospectuses and discuss the full spectrum of course options with experts and representatives from each of the individual institutes.

“Visitors to the convention will also have the chance to draw on the expertise of Careers Scotland advisers, who will be providing impartial and informed advice on the various possible higher-education options.”

Information sessions will be held throughout the two-day convention at the following times:

Wednesday, September 10: 9.45am until noon; 1pm until 3pm, and 5.30pm until 7.30pm.

Thursday, September 11: 9.45am until noon and 1pm until 3pm.

Presentations by Ucas, the UK universities admissions service, will be given throughout the day, providing prospective students with guidance on filling out their Ucas forms.

The evening session – Student finance: a guide to funding for students and parents – will take place on Wednesday, September 10, from 6.30pm until 7pm.
