Adams’s Dingwall family first

ross county director won’t be joining magpies revolving door traffic

George Adams is determined to finish the job he started at Ross County, even if it means turning down the chance to help shape youth recruitment at one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

The County director of football was offered a prominent role at Newcastle United but has rejected it in favour of remaining at Victoria Park, where he has been since 2005.

It was not even the fact that the Magpies seem to lurch from one crisis to another, with manager Kevin Keegan this week resigning citing boardroom interference, that convinced Adams to stay put.

It was his determination to fulfil his job at Dingwall and show loyalty to the club and chairman Roy McGregor.

Adams said: “I could have gone to Newcastle but I decided against it out of loyalty to the club, the supporters and the chairman.

“Newcastle might be a bit unstable at the moment but that has nothing to do with it.

“I have been offered positions at four Premier League clubs in the past but I am loyal to Ross County and have a job to do here.

“I enjoy working at the club and I do not think my job is finished here yet, it is only just starting.

“I feel as though I want to give another three or four years to the club to help Ross County achieve success.

“Apart from relegation two seasons ago, we have went back up, won a trophy and in general we have been progressing.

“There is a good feeling surrounding the club and I want to continue that over the coming years.”

The news Adams is committed to County comes as a boost ahead of Sunday’s Challenge Cup quarter final at Clyde, the side they defeated to lift the trophy in 2006.

The Staggies could be without attacker David Winters for up to six weeks after it was revealed he fractured his second metatarsal in last weekend’s 1-0 victory at Partick Thistle. Fellow attacker Michael Gardyne is also a fitness doubt.

Manager Derek Adams said: “It is a blow to lose David because he has started the season so well. It is up to whoever comes in to perform. This is a competition we are hoping to do well in.

“We managed to beat the holders, St Johnstone, in the first round and if we can get past Clyde there is a chance of playing on live television. The club would love to lift the Challenge Cup again.”
