glass design proves a winner with judges

A NORTH-EAST lecturer has seen off competition from more than 100 entries to be awarded one of Europe’s most prestigious prizes in craft work and sculpture. Geoffrey Mann, 28, of Robert Gordon University’s Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, won the World Craft Council-Europe Award. He was praised for showing “fine original craftsmanship”.
His piece, titled Takeoff, is a glass structure and Mr Mann impressed competition judges with the way he could “pick up a silent moment in time and translate this poetry into glass”.
The artist, who is originally from Kirkcaldy, said: “It is a great honour to receive the award, especially with the style of work I have created. This is another example of how the Craft Council organisation embraces progressive practices.”
Prof Stuart MacDonald, head of Gray’s School of Art, said: “Geoff’s work demonstrates the crucial link between art, craft and design and this award is testimony to that. Having a major international practitioner working with students is hugely important as he is a living demonstration of that relationship.”
Mr Mann’s work is currently on display at European Glass Context 2008 – a symposium in Denmark for European contemporary glass and ceramics.
