Rise in store cattle prices

THE amazing buoyancy of the store cattle market continued yesterday at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ weekly sale at Thainstone Centre, with average prices showing a further rise on the week.
A total of 522 steers averaged 158.3p per kg (up 1.1p) and 449 heifers averaged 156.5p per kg (up 2.4p).
“Strong store cattle were dearer and short of requirements but prices for yearlings were similar to last week,” said ANM store cattle manager John Angus.
The special sale of Highland cattle yesterday sold to 580gn for a steer and 500gn for a heifer, both from Coirscunan Lodge.
The part dispersal of Aberdeen Council’s Highland fold from Doonies Farm sold to 580gn for a cow and heifer calf. The stock bull realised 470gn.
Meanwhile, around 340 head of beef breeding cattle will go under the hammer next Saturday at Wardes Farm, Kintore. The auction, which starts at 11am, will be conducted by Aberdeen and Northern Marts on behalf of A. R. Mathers and Sons.
ANM will be staging its annual multi-breed ram shows and sales on Tuesday.
With almost 900 animals entered, the event will once again be sponsored by animal-feed specialists Harbro, in conjunction with Intervet.
