Wheelchair curling club seeks sponsor
Travel and hotel costs mounting cup

A WHEELCHAIR curling club based in Elgin is looking for a sponsor or financial backer to help fund their entry into tournaments.
Members of the Moray Wheelchair Curling Club train three times a week at Moray Leisure Centre in Elgin and take part in monthly tournaments held in the north, but travel and hotel costs to places such as Aberdeen and Perth is making it hard for the six members of the club to keep competing.
Since the club was founded three years ago they have raised their own money from group events such as street collections and car boot sales, but hotel fees of up to £1,000 are making it hard for them to continue.
Michael McKenzie, club treasurer and member of the squad, said: “Basically, what we are looking for is sponsorship to fund the club. If we can get a local company involved it would help because we are all in wheelchairs (so) it’s hard to get cheap accessible accommodation. Each weekend away can cost about £1,000 for all of us just to pay for a place to stay.
“We do hold fundraisers, which we don’t mind doing, it’s just that we need more money to keep going.”
Last year the team finished 7th out of 12 teams in the province east division seven league but they are hoping to do better this year.
Two members of the club are also part of the Great Britain development team, which acts as a backup to the main squad. Their next knockout tournament date is in Inverness tomorrow.
