Radio 4 presenter is back at Braeview

Eddie Mair offers tips to pupils as he opens Dundee academy’s ambition hall

NATIONAL broadcaster Eddie Mair went back to school in his home town of Dundee yesterday when he opened Braeview Academy’s Ambition Hall.

The voice of Radio 4’s PM programme, Mr Mair attended the school in the 1970s and 1980s, when it was known as Whitfield High.

During the morning Mr Mair was given a guided tour of the building.

He met media studies pupils, as well as those who work on the school radio station and magazine.

The Ambition Hall, which has a stage, and seating and lighting for drama, music and other performances, was created as part of Braeview's three-year stretch as one of the country's Schools of Ambition.

It is intended to act as a focus for future achievements. The school was praised by inspectors earlier this year for its recent transformation.

“It's humbling to think that my old school remembers me, and even better to realise that the kind of facilities which inspired me have been improved on to help today's Braeview pupils,” said Mr Mair.

“I also have some homework to hand in."

Dundee City Council education convener Laurie Bidwell said Mr Mair’s visit to his old school would be inspirational for pupils.

“I am sure that pupils will all gain experiences which will be of great benefit to them,” he said.

“Those who take part in the school's already successful radio station are getting tips from one of the most high-profile broadcasters in Britain.

“Eddie Mair is a tremendous example to everyone at Braeview Academy. Pupils are able to relate to someone who grew up in their area, and is working in a career that has taken in local, Scottish and British broadcasting.”
