Red, pink and green fireworks shot into the sky yesterday – but this was no ordinary firework display.

Instead, it marked the launch of a bonfire and firework safety campaign involving Grampian Fire and Rescue Service, Grampian Police and Aberdeen City Council’s Trading Standards Service.

To show the dangers associated with the misuse of fireworks the three agencies joined together at Aberdeen fire station headquarters on North Anderson Drive.

Standing on the grass was a mannequin, dressed like a typical teenager, but with fireworks in its pockets. Within seconds of the explosives being lit, sparks flew and flames began to rage through the mannequin’s clothing.

Group manager Ally Birkett, head of community safety for the fire brigade, said: “Imagine that was a real person, it would not only be his jacket burning but human flesh.

“Fireworks are explosives, not toys. If they are used inappropriately they have the potential to cause severe injury or death. The safety of the public is Grampian Fire and Rescue Service’s main concern. “We want people to enjoy themselves and not to take risks.”

With Guy Fawkes Night approaching fast, the emergency services are urging people to attend a public display, rather than holding a private firework party at home.

Police inspector Alan Keith said: “We would strongly encourage people to go to an organised event. It is an offence for any person to throw, cast or fire any firework in or into a public place, and for under-18s to be in possession of a firework in a public place.”

Graham Shand, of Aberdeen City Council’s trading standards service, was also at the launch of the campaign, and said traders caught selling fireworks to under-18s can be prosecuted.

The public display in Aberdeen will take place at the beach on November 5 from 7pm.
