George Burley is once again prepared to be bold in his team selection for today’s World Cup Group 9 qualifier against Norway.

The Scotland manager showed in Iceland that he is not afraid to take risks with his line-up, when he sent out his team in a 4-3-3 formation with attacking players such as Shaun Maloney, Kris Commons and James McFadden.

That match was a must-win and he faces another he cannot afford to lose against the Norwegians at Hampden Park today.

Burley is preparing to abandon the cautious approach that has been the Scotland way over the last decade.

The manager evaded questions about his starting XI but the indications in the camp are that he is set to hand Wolves targetman Chris Iwelumo a dramatic debut for Scotland.

There are also likely to be places for Celtic's Maloney as well as West Bromwich Albion's James Morrison, who missed the opening two qualifiers through injury but he has been a revelation in the English Premier League this season.

With Rangers striker Kenny Miller injured these three will provide Scotland with the attacking impetus along with the talismanic McFadden.

Burley said: “I thought we did very well in Iceland and in the second half in Macedonia and, if players do well, they will be given the opportunity to build on it.

“We have a squad of 22 players and everyone has an opportunity.

“I feel we have got some very good footballers and we want to get going that short, sharp passing game. We have to allow these players to do what they are good at.

“We have worked on it this week and that is what we are looking to do against Norway.”

Burley added: “The likes of Shaun Maloney gives us that bit of creativity and he can give Norway problems.

“He is a natural wide attacking player. He can create and score goals and he has the ability to take people on.

“James Morrison has looked exceptional in training this week, he is maturing all of the time and he is looking stronger.

“This is a big match and there is a lot of pressure on but you have to be strong.

“These are the games you want to be involved in. Of course you are excited but you have got to have belief."
