Sandra’s knitting kits to help raise money for guide dogs

AN ELGIN woman has made knitting kits to sell in her store at Forres to raise money for Guide Dogs for the Blind.

The gesture is a thank-you for the help the charity has given her husband.

David Dick, of Hay Street, has been registered blind for more than 30 years and needs a dog to help him get around.

His wife, Sandra, who owns Krafty Knits in High Street, Forres, decided to make her own kits and patterns and donate the money raised to the charity after the arrival of Mr Dick’s new guide dog.

The dog came after a four-year break since his last dog, an alsatian called Whitney, retired.

His latest dog, a retriever, came from Wokingham, Berkshire.

Mr Dick said: “It costs around £5,000 to train a puppy, including the walker expenses and vet bills.

“The relationship between the owner and guide dog is very important.

“There is some personality-matching but the most important thing is the speed the person walks at and the environment he is going to be in. I need my guide dog.

“He gets me out and about without any difficulties or having to relying on others to take me out.

“In general he is quite good. I am very grateful to have him.”

The knitting kits will include a pattern to complete and the necessary amount of wool.

They are in limited supply and are priced from £12 to £16.
