Highland had the stage to themselves after rivals Caithness were the victims of a late postponement by Stewarty, who were unable to raise a team to travel to Thurso.
The Canal Park men took full advantage of playing at home, winning 20-5 against Greenock Wanderers, enabling them to push up into eighth place from sec-ond bottom in National League 2.
A relieved and pleased Hugh McIntosh, the Inverness head coach, said: “It was a vastly improved performance from a side which has taken the lessons of the last few weeks on board, getting pride back in the process.
“My only disappointment was in not getting a winning bonus point. We were almost there and had our chances to improve on the three tries we scored.”
An outstanding display from stand off Chris McLure kept the home side in charge, enabling it to go into the break 10 points to the good through a try from Richard Finn, who added a second in the final quarter of the game.
Andy McKay kicked a conversion and penalty for the home side.
Young Rory Cross had another fine day for the Canal Park side and was rewarded with a second-half touchdown, but try as they might Highland could not score a fourth to gain a much-needed bonus point.
Andrew Findlater was magnificent in the home pack, dominating the lineout to the delight of McIntosh.
