Saxophonists jazz up north-east festival
Pair pass on skills to primary and secondary youngsters

PUPILS from schools in Aberdeen city and shire have been joining in musical workshops this week as part of the north-east’s Sound festival.
As part of the event, saxophonists Rob Hall and Richard Ingham have visited primary and secondary school pupils to create some musical magic.
Yesterday, Mr Hall dropped in on members of Harlaw Academy’s jazz band and spent time improving and creating new music with the group – a key focus for the Sound festival.
He said: “In schools, rehearsal times are never very long and teachers are under pressure to get their musicians prepared for concerts. Improvisation is the key to jazz, so we spent our session creating some new sounds.”
Over the week Mr Hall has also visited pupils at Fettercairn, Inverbervie, Auchenblae and Glenbervie primaries for question-and-answer sessions.
Mr Ingham, former leader of the Northern Saxophone Quartet, visited pupils at Meldrum, Westhill and Cluny primaries and Meldrum Academy during the week for similar activities.
The pair will be appearing in a weekend of saxophone events and performances, including a massed Saxophone Gala Concert in Aberdeen’s Beach Ballroom on Sunday.
The festival runs until November 17 with events taking place at various venues. For further details visit www.sound-scotland.co.uk
