Police are investigating after a teenager was found dying on a north-east golf course.

Josh Dixon was discovered lying on a green at Inverallochy, near Fraserburgh, on Saturday morning.

He was taken by ambulance to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where he later died.

It is thought the 17-year-old, from nearby St Combs, had spent the night on the course and died after becoming exposed to the elements. The night before, he had been at a party with friends.

It is the second time in just a matter of weeks that the small coastal village has been hit by tragedy.

Fraserburgh Academy pupil Alexander Milne died when he was hit by a car near his home on the edge of St Combs, just moments after he stepped off a school bus.

The 12-year-old’s death on September 19 led to a national debate on the safety of school buses.

Last night, Mr Dixon’s family, of West Street, declined to speak. This weekend, friends of the ex-Fraserburgh Academy pupil set up an internet page on social network site Bebo to pay tribute.

One wrote: “It’s going to be so hard without you. You were pals with so much folk and you were just a topper of a loon fa cheered everybody up and you made everybody’s day. Now you’re nae there to cheer us up and be the joker.”

Another said: “You always had fun fariver you went, so I'm sure you’ll be causing a fuss up there!”

Mr Dixon was found just after 7am by a local resident out walking his dog, who used his mobile phone to call for help.

It is understood the teenager was found without a coat and with one shoe missing.

Temperatures overnight slumped to below freezing level.

A Grampian Police spokesman said inquiries were being carried out to determine what happened.

“At this stage, there appear to be no suspicious circumstances. A report will be prepared for the procurator fiscal.”

No one from Inverallochy golf course was available to speak about the grim discovery.

Last night, local councillor Fiona McRae said: “This is a real tragedy and our thoughts right now are with the family. I was in St Combs this weekend and everyone is just in a state of shock.

“The whole village has been rocked by sadness, particularly because this comes so soon after the shocking death of another young boy.”

She said: “I didn't know the family personally, but from what I’ve been told he was a really nice lad who had plenty of friends.

“He will be sorely missed.”

Mr Dixon was known as a big fan of alternative guitar music like the Dykeenies and Stereophonics, and was a keen gig goer. It is understood he had left school and was studying at Fraserburgh’s Banff and Buchan College.

He stayed in St Combs with his older sister, Sophie, mother, Rebecca, and her partner Darren.

One neighbour said last night: “Everyone is just devastated.

“Josh was one of the good guys. He was a real character and he always had a lot of time for everybody. We’ll all miss him greatly.”
