Music teacher conducts final concert before leaving school

Children entertain Commando veterans and wives

THE annual concert staged for members of the Commando Association by staff and pupils of Lochaber High School was particularly poignant for music teacher John Whyte as it will be his last concert before he retires.

He was joined by D-Day veteran Stan Scott at the front of the hall who said a special thank-you for the many years of musical entertainment provided by the school under his baton.

An audience of more than 150 veterans with their wives filled the hall for a musical performance from Lochaber Wind Band, many of whom are pupils and Lochaber Schools Pipe Band, to hear old favourites from the 40s and military pipe tunes rounded off with a combined performance of Highland Cathedral.

Mr Whyte said: “This may be my last concert in the school but I am sure that I will continue to be involved in providing music for the association in the future.

“That is because the wind band plays a full role in the ceremony of remembrance every year.”

Members of the association also took the opportunity to present awards to teenagers Jamie-Lea Logan and Naomi MacKay for dedicated service to the band over the last year.
