caley thistle could sign ex-Don in transfer window

Inverness ponder a move for Byrne

Caley Thistle manager Craig Brewster is considering a move for former Aberdeen and Dunfermline defender Richie Byrne in January.

The 27-year-old Irishman has spent this week training with Caley Thistle after being released by English League 1 side Oldham.

Byrne spent just two months at Boundary Park and was troubled by hamstring problems during his time at the club.

He was dogged by the problem in his three-year spell at Aberdeen, where he started just 53 games.

The nadir of his Pittodrie spell was season 2006-07 with the injury so severe he made just five appearances.

Brewster, who was a team-mate of the left-sided player at Pittodrie and East End Park, has given Byrne training facilities and could sign him on a permanent contract when the transfer window opens again in January.

He said: “Richie has come up for a couple of days to train as he is finished at Oldham.

“If a player has been with a team in the Championship or downwards in England then teams in the SPL and Premier League can’t sign them unless it is an emergency goalkeeper – we have to wait until the transfer windows.

“I like Richie, although he has been troubled with injuries. He has trained with us since the start of the week and if he is available he could be an option for us in January.”

After finally breaking a winless streak which stretched to five games when defeating Hibs at Easter Road on Saturday, Caley Thistle will attempt to improve their dismal home record against Falkirk tonight.

Inverness have won just one league game out of six at Caledonian Stadium this term and Brewster knows they have to start winning at their own ground.

He said: “Our performances at home have been reasonable, but the results have been poor.

“We have to start using home advantage and get the crowd excited by what they are seeing on the park.

“We had four league defeats and a cup defeat in a row and it was really pleasing the players got back on winning terms.

“The victory gave everyone a lift. Last year we went on a decent run at this time and it would be nice to do it again this year.

“Falkirk have brought in Jackie McNamara who is playing very well at right back, Lee Bullen has also come in although he has been a substitute in recent games.

“Neil McCann has a new lease of life and Burton O’Brien has also been brought in and these experienced players are doing well for them.

“We are both good teams and it is all about who wants it more on the night.”

Ryan Esson is expected to keep his place in goal for tonight’s game, while defender Phil McGuire will miss out through injury.
