McDonald Golf Club has appointed a member of a north golfing family as new professional. Sandy Aird, jun, will join the Ellon club where he will replace Ronnie Urquhart, the professional of 26 years who has stood down on the grounds of ill health.

Aird, who had been working as assistant to his father at Forres, said: “From what I have seen and heard this is a great club with a forward-looking approach. It will be a pleasure to join them. This is a great opportunity for me.”

The 31-year-old has been playing the game since he was five and has passed all his exams with the highest grades.

The Cambuslang-born professional, along with his father, was responsible for introducing the much-acclaimed green card scheme to the Moray area and lists as his greatest achievement to date winning the Cambuslang Centenary Open in 2006.

“I also have a strong commitment to junior golf and I am delighted McDonald has a tradition of supporting juniors,” said Aird.

McDonald club captain Jim O’Brien hailed the appointment. He said: “Sandy’s forward-thinking attitude came through strongly at the interview. It’s a pleasure to know he is joining us.”

Tain’s Munro Ferries won his third North Golf Alliance event of the season on his home course.

Ferries grossed equal halves of 34 for a one-under-par card of 68 to win by four from Wick's plus one player Ronnie Taylor.

In the Class 1 handicap section Seann Sutherland (Bonar Bridge) also become a three-times winner, despite losing two balls in his round.

Sutehrland’s nett 68, off seven, was enough to beat Grant Maxwell (Reay) with Francis Keith, of Durness, taking the honours in Class 2.
