Dons manager Calderwood has faith in winger Aluko

Sone is learning every week and always improving, says Jimmy

Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood believes Dons attacker Sone Aluko is already proving to be a shrewd investment.

The Dons exceeded their summer transfer budget to sign Aluko on transfer deadline day in a £50,000 deal.

The former Birmingham City wide player has scored two goals in his last three matches, including the second in Tuesday night’s 2-0 victory against St Mirren where he played in an unfamiliar role behind the front pair. The 19-year-old England youth international is hoping to retain his place in the side to face Hibs at Easter Road this afternoon.

In a week when one-time Aberdeen signing target Ferrie Bodde was labelled with a £4million price tag by Swansea, Calderwood insisted his bargain buy is turning into a top asset.

He said: “We almost got Ferrie last year for nothing, but he was one that got away. You win some, you lose some but we are on to a winner with Sone. I am not saying he is a £4million player but I would be confident of getting our money back on him.

“The club found a bit extra to sign him and it has been a great piece of business. I have been delighted with him. He is such an exciting player. He is learning every week and always improving. He has terrific pace and he is only going to get stronger.

“Sone can play a number of positions and he is brave. He can take a knock and defenders do not like playing against him, especially when he is running straight at them.

“His best position depends on what mood he is in. If he feels like defending he can play wide but, if not, he is better up front. He played behind the front two on Tuesday and was crowded out a bit, but I have seen him perform there for the England under 19s and it is another option for us.”

Attackers Jamie Smith and Tommy Wright are unavailable for another fortnight, while midfielder Stuart Duff will have knee surgery next week and will be out until the new year.
