I would have watched the game on television, says Miller

Dons striker dreaming of some Hampden glory

Lee Miller was planning to watch Scotland’s high-profile Hampden friendly against Argentina tomorrow night on the television – now the Aberdeen striker is dreaming of a starring role.

The 25-year-old centre forward received a call-up after six players withdrew from George Burley’s squad to face an Argentina side managed for the first time by Diego Maradona.

Forwards Kenny Miller, Steven Fletcher and Ross McCormack all pulled out along with goalkeeper Craig Gordon and midfielders Darren Fletcher and James Morrison. Uncapped Dundee United midfielder Scott Robertson is also a late draft.

Miller has been in impressive for the Dons, despite scoring just once from open play this season, and he admitted he had not given up hope of adding to his one cap, earned in the Kirin Cup victory in Japan in 2006.

He said: “I was delighted to get the call.

“There are a lot of good players around, so I was not expecting to make the original squad. My form has been good, although there has been a lack of goals.

“I would have watched the game on television but it is one I am delighted to be involved in. It is a glamour tie for a friendly and it is brilliant it is Maradona’s first game in charge.

“I would love to get a chance to be involved but we will see what happens.”

Scotland assistant manager Terry Butcher said: “I am sure those who are not here will be disappointed but the players here will be looking forward to taking on one of the best teams in the world.

“Lee is a someone we have been watching and he has done well for Aberdeen. He is a big, strong centre forward who also has plenty of ability.”

Miller knows he has his work cut out getting into the national team on a regular basis, but is determined to show in training and in matches for Aberdeen he has what it takes to be a regular international.

He said: “I wasn’t necessarily worried I would never get back into the squad. I have had patchy form in my Aberdeen career so far but I’ve always had confidence in my ability and since the end of last season I have started to pick up a bit. I was called into the squad for the game in the Czech Republic at the end of May but could not go because it was the day of my wedding.

“It was great to have been in their thoughts but, obviously, it was my big day.

“The fact George considered me for the squad meant I thought if I did well at the start of the season I could get back in.

“I have to play well for my club week in, week out and, hopefully, get into the squad that way. I’ve just spoken to George and he’s told me to work hard and we’ll see what happens.

“Now if I get a run it will be great, but I’m not holding my breath. It’s about working hard in the training and seeing where that takes me.

“It is all about consistency. You’ve got to score goals, but if you are doing the other parts – linking, bringing players into the game – then you are doing half your job.

“The goals have not been flowing for me, but we are starting to get a few results and getting the performances right.”
