A professor has become only the third person to receive an award that was first given to Sir David Attenborough.
Prof Charles Gimingham, 85, has received the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management Medal for his pioneering work in heath and moorland management.
Sir David became the first recipient of the medal in 2006. Prof Gimingham, of Aberdeen, who was formerly a professor of botany at Aberdeen University, received the award at the institute’s autumn conference in Glasgow earlier this week. The event discussed the environmental impact of planning applications, a field Prof Gimingham is familiar with through his work in preserving the Cairngorms.
He said: “I was thrilled and delighted by the award. It was a tremendous surprise and a wonderful occasion. There were so many people there, old friends and colleagues, who were glad to congratulate me. I was also pleased to meet people for the first time who have done so much in the field, who also wanted to congratulate me on receiving the medal.”
