Baby jasmin takes north-east couple by surprise at their home
Farmer adds midwifery to talents as he delivers daughter

A north-east farmer was forced to turn his hand to midwifery when his new daughter made her unexpected arrival at home.
Graham Twatt, 38, of Easter Cushnie, near Gardenstown, helped deliver baby Jasmin in the family’s living-room. His background in farming was no help, however, as his farm is purely arable. His only preparation for Jasmin’s arrival was his presence at the hospital births of his two other daughters, Emma, 4, and Chloe, 2.
His wife, Ann, 30, had opted for a home birth for the new arrival and was a week overdue when she felt twinges on Monday, November 17. She alerted her husband at 9.30am and, initially, the twinges were thought to be a false alarm.
But 30 minutes later, it became clear that the baby was on her way and a midwife was summoned. By the time midwives at Banff could be sent Mr Twatt had delivered his new daughter on the living-room floor.
The birth went smoothly and was over in about five minutes.
He said: “I managed to keep calm, but it wasn’t something I would want to do too often. “It was unexpected, but it was just something that had to be done and there were no major problems.
“I managed to keep cool and I’m hoping this will be the last time.”
Baby Jasmin weighed in at 8lb 2oz and was taken with her mother to Dr Gray’s Hospital, in Elgin, for a precautionary check-up.
Mr Twatt added: “My wife was grateful for my help at the time and they are both doing well now at home.”
