A YOUNG scientist who wants to protect Scotland’s endangered birds collected a BSc in environmental science at Aberdeen University yesterday.

Shawn Webster, 22, from Sheddocksley Road, Aberdeen, graduated with a degree in zoology last year.

He was attracted to the postgraduate course as it gave him a chance to investigate which Scottish birds have seen their numbers dwindle in recent years.

He said: “We need to engage with politicians on the subject of endangered animals.

“They need to stop putting science in the background and start to look at the number of animals that are going extinct.”

During his studies, he looked at the causes and effects of the reduction of red kites and grouse north of the border.

He has now started a job working with the city’s annual Techfest event, at which he hopes to raise awareness of scientific problems that affect everyday life.
