MORE than £4,500 was raised at this year’s Moray Great Bike Ride, bringing the total to £45,000 since the event was launched nine years ago.
On September 14, 171 people gathered at Elgin Library in Cooper Park for the 21-mile course around the area’s highways and byways. Four people, dubbed the Birnie Bunch, managed to collect £600 between them, more than anyone else this year.
Team members were Lynn Roger, Jill Geach, Karen Norvell and Cliff Miller, all from Birnie.
They were awarded a trophy and a hamper from Baxters.
The youngest girl to complete the course was Mhairi MacLean, 6, of West Road, Elgin, and the youngest boy was Ross Coull, 8, from Roseisle. They were each given a £20 book token from Moray Council. All the money raised is donated to the Moray branch of the Grampian Society for the Blind.
There are about 600 registered blind people in the area who will benefit.
Bike ride organiser Caroline Coomber, Moray Council’s assistant leisure officer, said: “Next year will be the 10th anniversary of the event so we are planning something special, which we will announce at a later date.”
Next year’s Moray Great Bike Ride will be held on September 13 and will start at Cooper Park.
