Keeping an eye out for optical advances

Optometrists are trained in using and interpreting hi-tech equipment to help make informed decisions about vision and the health of your eyes. This is where today’s patients benefit from tomorrow’s technology…

For the McPherson brothers, Stephen and Malcolm, the journey to building their successful optometric practice in Aberdeen has been a steady one since their father decided to rent a room from a pharmacy in the east end of Aberdeen in 1960. In due course their father, Charles bought a section of the building and created his own entrance through the tenement corridor of 21 King Street.

In 1986, Charles was joined by the current partners, his sons Stephen (1985) and Malcolm (1986) after they both qualified with Honours degrees from the University of Aston in Birmingham.  This means the second generation of McPhersons are now celebrating 30 years in practice.

Later that year, a major renovation and expansion saw the practice expand to take on the entire ground floor, the whole of the original pharmacy premises where a room was rented in 1960. Two waiting areas, three consulting rooms and two special equipment rooms now provided the necessary accommodation for one of Aberdeen’s largest independent practices.

In late 2007 the entire first floor of the building was acquired and a new vision for an eye care focused practice began.  The new purpose built practice with a dedicated clinical suite was opened on 1 November 2011 by Mr Michael Matheson MSP, the minister for Public Health at that time.

In 2016 Stephen McPherson was awarded an Honorary Lectureship in Primary Care Ophthalmology.  He is currently involved in the MSc in Primary Care Ophthalmology course at the University of Edinburgh, for the first time providing education teaching both medicine and optometry together.

The changes the McPherson brothers have made since taking over from their father 18 years ago has enabled them to offer a high standard of care and a personal service as well as running specialist clinics in glaucoma and dry eye.  Today the practice operates over three floors, with lift access to the clinical suite and has 14 members of staff, including four optometrists.

The dry-eye clinic, is an area of significance for the partners,   This is a common and often chronic condition which requires specialist care and attention. We have the necessary equipment and training to provide the specialist care required.

When building up the practice, the partners point to the importance of bringing on board advanced eye examination equipment, such as digital imaging. The practice is equipped with computerised letter charts, a hi-tech video microscope and a 3D scanner which has the ability to take a sectional scan of the eye and examine the layers of the retina.   Their first digital retinal camera was purchased in 1996, and the current, state of the art optical coherence topographer was updated only last year.  Our Optometrists are fully trained in both using and interpreting the technology, constantly updating their skills to reflect technological advances.

All of the hi-tech equipment helps the optometrist complete a full eye health check and any images and scans taken are stored and can be used for comparison over time and even sent to the hospital eye clinic with a referral if required.
