Drake tops charts with surprise new single God’s Plan

Drake has leapfrogged the competition to steal this week’s number one spot after a surge on his new track God’s Plan.

The Canadian rapper, who was at number 16 on Monday at the midway stage of the charts week, pushed fellow rappers Eminem and Ramz out of the running to score his third UK number one.

Drake has ended the week with 6.5 million streams after God’s Plan gained momentum over the past few days, following its surprise release on Friday as part of his Scary Hours EP, the Official Charts Company said.

The success follows his previous two chart-toppers What’s My Name with Rihanna in 2010 and One Dance, which was at number one for 15 weeks in 2016.

Diplomatic Immunity, the other track on Drake’s EP, is at number 21 and has become the musician’s 32nd top 40 hit in the UK.

South London rapper Ramz’s Barking is at number two this week, ahead of Eminem’s River, featuring Ed Sheeran, which has fallen two places to number three.

Dua Lipa’s IDGAF has jumped from 14 to number four, while Jason Derulo and French Montana’s Tip Toe rounds off the top five.

Meanwhile, the soundtrack for musical film The Greatest Showman has continued its streak to land a third week at number one on the albums chart.

The cast recording has gained another 39,000 combined sales this week to retain its position at the chart summit, bringing its overall sales total to 129,000.

The soundtrack, which features its stars Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zac Efron and Zendaya, fended off competition from US rockers Fall Out Boy, whose new album Mania has debuted at number two.

Swedish folk trio First Aid Kit’s new album Ruins is in at number three this week, the group’s highest-charting UK record to date, smashing their previous peak of number 11 with 2014 record Stay Gold.

Ruins is also at the top of the Official Vinyl Albums chart this week and has become the week’s biggest seller in UK independent record shops.

Sheeran’s Divide is at number four this week and Eminem’s Revival is in fifth place.
