BBC Breakfast stars go back to school to sit maths GCSE

BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty is going back to school to sit a maths GCSE.

Jayne McCubbin and Tim Muffett are also swapping the famous red sofa for the classroom in a bid to understand what it is like to take a GCSE in 2018.

The trio will have maths lessons to help them prepare and will be set homework and take part in revision sessions, before sitting the paper under real exam conditions.

The Breakfast team will receive their results in August, live on air.

Former Strictly contestant Munchetty, who took her maths GCSE two years early and got an A, said: “I always loved maths and algebra. But I’ll be honest, I haven’t seen a maths paper in years.”

McCubbin, who received a D grade when she sat her O-level, admitted she is not so confident but hopes that by the end she “can help my kids a bit more”.

Muffett confessed he cannot remember some of the language used in the subject.

“What does expand and simplify mean?” he said. “It’s terminology I haven’t used for 30 years.

“But seriously – it will be interesting to explore how maths is taught in this country, to try and demystify it for mums and dads and help ease the anxiety and fear around the subject in general.”
