Nadiya Hussain has urged people to stop the “really unfair” practice of stockpiling goods amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Speaking on the BBC’s Coronavirus Newscast podcast, the TV chef and former Great British Bake Off winner urged people to think of the vulnerable and key workers.

She also revealed that she has been self-isolating for eight days after her child developed a cough last week.

Hussain said: “We’re trying to be really positive and looking at it as an experience to be able to reconnect with each other because we’re always so busy.

“So we have to look at it in a positive way otherwise we would go mad.

“I’ve had to be really strict with myself – I’ve not allowed myself to wake up in the morning and look at the news straight away, because you get caught up in all of this otherwise.”

She also criticised those who are buying more food than they need.

She said: “I just think people need to stop because we have to think about our elderly and we have to think about our NHS staff and everybody who is working around the clock to keep people safe.

“I think it’s really unfair what’s happening.”

She also urged people to make use of their freezers and fridges and to “make sure we know how we’re preparing and storing our vegetables and fresh produce”.
