Ladies led the charge at the show and sale of Young Farmers’ overwintered cattle at Dingwall yesterday.

The supreme champion title, as judged by Donald Fraser of Easter Clune, Lethen, Nairn, was presented to Stacy Tinney from Strathspey Young Farmers.

A first-time exhibitor at the fixture, Miss Tinney lifted the top title and achieved £1,300 selling her beast to the judge, with a 12-month-old Limousin cross bullock weighing 470kg.

Miss Tinney, who hails from The Glebe, Boat of Garten, Inverness, bought the bullock in October at Dingwall from J. Smith of the Rowans, Brora. She also won the prizes for best new exhibitor and best stock person at the show.

The reserve supreme champion and home-bred champion titles went to a 540kg Charolais cross bullock from Megan MacIver of Nairn JAC.

Miss MacIver, who hails from Wester Coltfield, Kinloss, achieved £1,320 when the beast sold to Backmuir Livestock Ltd in Keith.

Emily Stephen of 3 Dell of Inches, Inverness, took home the prizes for highest daily liveweight gain and highest gross margin.

Her 525kg Limousin cross bullock, which was purchased for £800 in October, achieved a daily liveweight gain of 1.4kg a day and sold for a gross margin of £520 when it went under the hammer for £1,320.

In all 14 bullocks sold to average 244.6p a kg and a top of 276.6p a kg. Heifers averaged 237p a kg and topped at 253.2p a kg for seven sold.

The event was sponsored by A.M. Phillip Agritech, Messrs Craiglands Quarry in Fortrose, and ABP in Perth.
