Miss Money Penny worth every guinea as sun shines on Banchory Show

Threatened showers failed to materialise on Saturday at the Banchory Show which was bathed in sunshine for most of the day.

As always, the show attracted town and country although the overall attendance was down on the year.

The show proved a triumph for Garry Patterson, Upper Forgie, Aultmore, Keith, who repeated his success at Echt Show three weeks ago by winning the breed, interbreed and “champion of champions” titles with his 18-month-old Limousin heifer, Foxhillfarm Miss Money Penny.

She is owned jointly with well-known Suffolk sheep breeder Graham Morrison, Inchbruich, Cornhill.

The heifer’s purchase price of 10,000gn at Carlisle in May seems a bargain, given that her sire is the 38,000gn Foxhillfarm Irish Lad and she is out of the breed’s record-priced female at 125,000gn, Glenrock Illusion. A full sister was interbreed champion at the Highland.

Also continuing on their winning way were Huntly livestock dealer Blair Duffton and Rebecca Stuart from Insch.

Their jointly-owned Charolais cross Irish-bred heifer Gold Rush topped a strong commercial beef cattle section and went on to stand reserve for the interbreed beef cattle championship. She was champion of champions at Fettercairn, reserve at Echt and cross cattle champion at New Deer. It was a successful day for Blair and Rebecca who also carried the interbreed group-of-three award with three black cross cattle.

Local exhibitors and former show president Robin Stewart and his wife, Karen, Stablebrae, Durris, carried off the reserve “champion of champions” award with their native breed horse champion, the 12-year-old Highland mare West Lodge Ashley, which has won many accolades during her long career, including the interbreed championship at Black Isle last year.

Reserve for the native horse championship was the Shetland champion the filly Lynemore Isla, from Christine Forbes, 1 Dullanbank, Dufftown.

Veteran Suffolk breeder Judith Lorimer, Cadgerford, Kingswells, with son Stuart and granddaughter Hannah were delighted to win the interbreed sheep championship with a home-bred gimmer by Lakeview Laidlaw being shown for the first time.

Reserve for the sheep award went to Stuart and Wendy Hunter, West Cairnhill, Culsalmond, with their Texel champion, a home-bred ewe lamb by the 1,200gn Knap Yardmaster.
