A pair of farming brothers was crowned top of the flocks at the Scottish Association of Young Farmers’ Clubs north region competitions day at Huntly Mart.
William and David Moir, of Home Farm, Cairness, came out top in both the senior beef cattle dressing and senior prime lamb dressing contests. The duo, who are members of Strichen JAC, scored 97 points out a possible 100 in the cattle section and 93 out of 100 in the lamb contest.
Cattle judge Debbie Watt, from New Deer, awarded first place in the junior section to Finn Christie and Cameron Hunter from Garioch Young Farmers Club (YFC) with a score of 80 points. Lamb judges Ross and Kirsty Williams, Upper Tullochbeg, Huntly, also gave the top junior award to the Garioch duo who scored 79 points.
Other prizes included second place in the senior cattle section to Graeme Rhind and Craig Reid from Lower Speyside YFC, and third place to Darren Davidson and Richard Davidson from Keith YFC.
Second place in the senior lamb section went to Udny JAC members Amy Jo Reid and Lewis Gallier, and third place to Marcus Scholes and Alistair Johnston from Orkney District.
The other junior lamb section prizes were second place to Faye Wilkie and Hannah Lorimer from Echt YFC, and third place to Campbell Ridland and Keith Isbister from Orkney District.
The day also featured an agri skills competition where teams were tasked with completing a range of challenges including securing a load, reversing a trailer, taking a silage pit measurement and completing a health and safety quiz.
The top prize went to a team from Garioch YFC comprising Neil Watt, Callum Simpson and Cameron Hunter. Second place went to Vale of Alford’s team of Steven Eddie, Alasdair Bruce and Eric Sim, and third place to Udny JAC’s Stephen Allan, Tom Bruce and Lewis Gallier.
